Re-reading notes can feel productive because familiar material becomes easier to recognize. But recognition is not the same as being able to produce an answer when the notes are closed. Active recall changes the task: instead of repeatedly looking at information, you deliberately try to retrieve it from memory.

What active recall means

Active recall is retrieval practice. You learn material, remove the source, then attempt to remember an answer, concept, process or explanation before checking your work.

Build a question bank

Maintain a small collection of questions for important topics. Remove questions that no longer matter, rewrite ambiguous prompts and add application questions alongside factual ones.

A good question bank becomes a map of what you want to be able to retrieve, not a warehouse of every sentence you have ever read.

Measure learning by what you can do

Instead of asking “How many hours did I study?” ask what you can now explain, recall, solve or apply without assistance. This shifts attention from study activity to learning capability.
